= Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SS chassis 0312.917 (2) = '''Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 SS chassis 0312.917 (2)''' is a 1929 Super Sport associated with engine 10814381 and part of the complex dual-identity history surrounding chassis number 0312.917 in the United Kingdom. ---- == Factory specification == * Year: 1929 * Model: [[Alfa Romeo 6C 1500]] * Variant: 6C 1500 SS * Body style: Spyder / Cabriolet * Chassis number: 0312.917 (second car using this identity) * Engine number: 10814381 * Coachbuilder: Zagato * Exterior colour: Red * Interior: Black * Registration number(s): FGU108; possibly UV5647 (uncertain) * Registration country: United Kingdom * Pictures documented: Not recorded ---- == Identity notes == This is the second car associated with chassis number 0312.917. It is recorded as having been fitted with a ''Testa Fissa'' engine at some stage. Overall originality remains unclear. It must be determined whether registration UV5647 belongs to this car or to the other car historically associated with the same chassis number. ---- == Historical background (shared identity context) == The original 6C0312917 was described from new as a torpedo (drophead 4-seater) by "Carlton Carriage Ltd." and was raced in 1929 and 1930 by Earl Howe (later Lord Howe). That car was fitted at times with a ''testa fissa'' (“fixed head”) engine. The fixed-head engine eliminated the head gasket, allowing increased compression and improved reliability in racing. Early in period, such special components were often regarded as remaining the property of Alfa Romeo even when installed in privately owned cars. During the 1930s, the original car’s registration number changed, and the engine was later replaced. Another car later became known in the UK as "0312917" based on use of engine 0312917 beginning circa 1938(?) in a chassis numbered 0332975 (based on the left-front frame number). The right-rear chassis stamping is not recorded and may not have existed. During the 1960s, engine 0312917 was reportedly returned to its original chassis. That chassis/frame was eventually fitted with engine 10814381 — the configuration associated with this second car. The car last appeared in available notes when offered at auction in 2009. ---- == Ownership history == {| class="wikitable" ! Owner !! Location !! Notes |- | Various owners || United Kingdom || Associated with chassis/engine identity reconstruction; recorded through 2009 |} ---- == Registry classification == * 6C 1500 SS * Zagato-bodied example * Associated with Testa Fissa engine history * Dual chassis/engine identity case (0312.917) ---- == Chassis registry reference == See: [[Alfa Romeo 6C 1500/Chassis Registry]]
