Manufacturers
In the pre-war era, automobile manufacturers were responsible for the design, engineering, and production of mechanical components such as chassis, engines, transmissions, and running gear.
Unlike later mass-production models, many manufacturers did not supply complete automobiles. Instead, they provided rolling chassis which were bodied by independent coachbuilders to suit the preferences and requirements of individual clients.
Manufacturers and coachbuilders
Pre-war automobile production was characterised by a clear division of roles:
- The **manufacturer** designed and produced the mechanical foundation
- The **coachbuilder** designed and constructed the body
- The **client** often specified the final configuration
While some manufacturers offered factory bodies or maintained close relationships with particular coachbuilders, the distinction between manufacturer and coachbuilder remained fundamental throughout much of the pre-war period.
Scale and specialisation
Manufacturers varied widely in scale and intent. They ranged from large industrial concerns producing thousands of chassis annually to small firms constructing highly specialised sporting or racing machines in limited numbers.
Broadly, manufacturers may be grouped into:
- Mass-market producers
- Luxury and prestige marques
- Sporting and competition-focused firms
- Specialist and experimental manufacturers
These distinctions were often fluid, and many manufacturers evolved significantly over time.
Geographic traditions
National traditions strongly influenced design philosophy, engineering priorities, and market positioning. Climate, taxation, road conditions, and cultural preference all played a role in shaping regional characteristics.
The following sections provide entry points by geography.
Manufacturers by country
United Kingdom
France
Italy
Germany
United States
Other countries
- Tatra (Czechoslovakia)
- Horch (Germany)
- Hansa (Germany)
- Hispano-Argentina (Argentina)
Notes on scope
This index focuses on manufacturers active primarily before 1939. Post-war entities are included only where necessary to provide continuity or historical clarification.
The list is not intended to be exhaustive and will expand as additional material is researched and documented.
